The San Saba Mission: Spanish Pivot in Texas by Robert S. Weddle,

The San Saba Mission: Spanish Pivot in Texas by Robert S. Weddle,
The Spanish approach to the occupation of eighteenth-century Texas embraced the triad of mission, presidio, and settlement. In founding communities, Franciscan missionaries sought to convert the natives to Christianity and make them productive Spanish citizens. By midcentury, however, change was in the offing. The turning point was the San Saba Mission disaster and the ensuing military campaign to punish the Indians responsible. In 1758, the mission, near present-day Menard, was destroyed with the loss of several lives, including two of the missionaries, less than a year after its founding. In The San Saba Mission Robert S. Weddle examines the factors that led to this tragedy and its influence on the reshaping of frontier policy, as well as the residual effects not only on the immediate Spanish settlements but on the area's development as a whole. Weddle's book offers a gripping account of the presidio's role in the episode, drawing on archival sources, including correspondence of missionaries and military officers with their superiors in Mexico. Weddle analyzes the consequences of the mission-to-settlement system and concentrates on the military aspects of the mission, noting that after the religious mission was abandoned, the presidio served later as the base for the strongest Spanish military expedition against Indians in Texas and probed territory as far west as the Pecos River. The San Saba Mission recounts some of the most sensational events in Spanish-Texas history in an intriguing and entertaining voice. A new introduction to this 1964 classic describes the findings of archaeologists after the mission site, not previously known, was discovered and excavated in the early1990s. This volume stands as a valuable resource in the canon of Texas history.

Texas and Northeastern Mexico, 1630-1690 by Juan Bautista Chapa,
Texas and Northeastern Mexico, 1630-1690 by Juan Bautista Chapa,
In the seventeenth century, South Texas and Northeastern Mexico formed El Nuevo Reino de Leon, a frontier province of New Spain where Spanish settlements were widely scattered and subject to clashes with the Native American inhabitants. In 1690, a resident Spanish official looked back over the eventful, sometimes tumultuous history of Nuevo Leon and penned a richly detailed account of the years 1630 to 1690. Although Juan Bautista Chapa's Historia de Nuevo Leon was not published until 1909, it has since been acclaimed as the key contemporary document for any historical study of Spanish colonial Texas. This book offers the only accurate and annonated English translation of Chapa's Historia. Drawing on the Discourses of Governor Alonso de Leon (the elder), which cover the years 1580 to 1649, and on his own experiences as permanent secretary to the governors of Nuevo Leon, Chapa traces the history and colonization of Texas and Northeastern Mexico from the 1630s onward. He presents the only account of the Spanish expeditions in the 1660s against the Cacaxtle Indians, who had raided south of the Rio Grande for horses and slaves, and the only diary account of Alonso (the younger) de Leon's 1686 expedition to the Gulf of Mexico in search of La Salle's French settlement. Chapa was also an authority on the local Indians, and his Historia lists the names and locations of over 300 Indian tribes. This information, together with descriptions of the vegetation, wildlife, and climate in seventeenth-century Texas, will be of interest to ethnographers, anthropologists, biogeographers, and other scholars.
